Challenge

A large, Australian educational organization that oversees and supports a network of Catholic schools across regions in Australia, needed better visibility of the assets across their schools. They also wanted tools to annotate and mark up their assets on a map for better decision-making, as well as the ability to conduct roof and building inspections.

Their existing approach with Google Maps and other imagery providers fell short due to outdated data and limited functionality, while manual site inspections were time-consuming. Seeking a more efficient solution, they turned to Birdi.

Solution

With Birdi, the organization now has up-to-date maps and site plans of 27 schools across their managed regions. They have saved time and money by conducting online asset assessments instead of manually sending contractors to sites, and have clearer oversight over their assets for improved decision-making.

Birdi helped the educational organization in the following ways:

  • Drone data capture of each school, using Birdi’s drone pilot network
  • Visualization of each school map within the Birdi platform
  • The ability to annotate, measure and markup processed orthomosaics to garner insights
  • Online inspections of school buildings and assets, without the time and expense of contractors being sent to site

Drone data capture

Birdi’s drone pilot network captured over 25,000 total images across the 27 schools during their holiday break period.

Geospatial data visualization and processing

The captured images were then uploaded into the organization’s workspace on Birdi and processed into 2D and 3D maps and models. These processed outputs (orthomosaics and 3D point clouds) provided the organization meaningful context and top-down site visibility across each of their schools.

Annotations tools

Using Birdi’s annotation tools, their team marked up areas on school maps, measured distances, and calculated asset areas with ease. These annotations were quickly compiled into detailed Annotation Reports, making further analysis and stakeholder sharing seamless and efficient.

Online asset inspections

Instead of dispatching contractors to each school across the region, the educational organization streamlined their site and asset inspections, saving time and money, by leveraging Birdi’s platform. High-resolution images and 360-degree panoramas of every building and asset could be reviewed remotely, allowing issues to be identified quickly, and maps to be shared with external contractors (saving up to 9-10 hours on round trips).

Results and benefits of using Birdi

  • Improved visibility and oversight: The organization now has accurate, up-to-date maps and site plans for 27 schools, providing a clearer understanding of their assets and their condition.
  • Time and cost savings: Online inspections and asset assessments have eliminated the need for costly and time-consuming manual site visits by contractors.
  • Enhanced decision-making tools: Birdi’s annotation and measurement tools have enabled their team to mark up and analyse site maps and building assets with precision, streamlining decision-making processes.
  • Efficient drone data capture: Birdi’s drone pilot network captured over 25,000 high-quality images during the school holiday period, ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.
  • Comprehensive geospatial insights: Processed outputs, including orthomosaics and 3D models, provided meaningful context and detailed site visibility for better planning and asset management.
  • Streamlined reporting: Annotations and inspections were easily exported into actionable reports, allowing for seamless sharing with stakeholders and informed decision-making.
